oil painting!

i'm taking VAILL 450R (Painting the Human Head) taught by Greg Newbold.  this class is amazing so far, and it's literally the first time i've done oil painting.  usually, i don't put up crap work up here, but i believe that persistence and effort pays off.  as you can see, my third one from today is such a huge improvement from the first one.  Greg Newbold is the MAN, take his class if you can.

1st attempt at oil painting (6/19/12)

2nd attempt (6/20/12)

3rd attempt (6/21/12)

so, i think i'm getting there... i'm starting to learn how to control the medium.  yay!

also, my teacher Ryan Woodward released a new comic book APP!  yes, an APP!  check it out, you'll love it.  it's not just a regular comic book...  check it out at www.bottom-of-the-ninth.com

experimental sketches...

some old, some new, but they're awesome nonetheless.

i think i'll do some more work on this sketch... and i'm sure some of you recognize this as joe olson's style, and yes you're right.  inspired by his wicked shapes.

a quick head study (1 min) for my head painting class... gotta learn those dark areas.  oil paintin' ain't easy as it looks.

a really really random drawing, but its a some form of cyclops with a dress and a purse...

i saw a picture of "monsters vs aliens" today and drew this quickie.

"censored" sketchdump

so, i've been drawing a lots of stuff lately.  those are the ones i really like from my sketchbook, hence the "censored" use in my post title.  there were a lot of other doodles and scribbles in my sketchbook as well.  enjoy!

some fun gestures

drew this from memory - we had 30 seconds to memorize the pose from the model, and draw it.  it was a fun exercise idea by Ryan.

my favorite one!

5 mins

5 mins.  this was a viking with a fur vest, helmet and a sword.

i'm going to miss this class when it ends next week monday.  i think i'm going to take it again in the near future so i can push my gestures and make them better!
